HOMILIES QUESTIONS

“ARE YOU NEARER GOD THAN WE?”

This reflection is based on Luke 1:26-38 for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

“You are not nearer God than we,” the angel declares almost resentfully to Mary in Rilke’s poem “Annunciation: Words of the Angel.”  But no sooner has the angel said these words when he gazes into Mary’s eyes and is stunned by God’s shimmering presence in her.  In fact, so surprised is the angel, according to Rilke, that he nearly forgets the message he has been sent to announce in the first place.

FINDING NOAH’S ARK

This homily is based on Matthew 24:37-44 for the First Sunday of Advent.

For many of us these days, despair is a real temptation. Some of us have actually sworn to keep away from our newsfeed and just get ourselves inebriated in premature Christmas carols. Can the news in the country, in the US, and in the world get any worse? And I don’t know about you, but today’s Gospel, which opens the season of Advent, is no help as far as lifting our spirits is concerned.

WHICH KING AND WHICH THIEF?

This reflection is based on Luke 23:35-43 for the Solemnity of Christ the King.

It is telling that ours is a religion where kingship is depicted with the king not seated on a throne, not crowned with jewels, or surrounded by a powerful army. Instead we have our king bloodied and crucified, crowned with thorns, and hanging between two criminals.

IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH YU GOKONGWEI

This homily was delivered during the wake Mass for Mrs. Elizabeth “Bia” Gokongwei on 17 November 2019.

I would like to start off by saying that even those of us who did not know our sister Elizabeth very well knew that she was a wonderful person. People who’ve spent even just a short time with her always somehow ended up smitten.

Elizabeth Yu Gokongwei (09 February 1934 – 16 November 2019)

I speak from experience. You see, she had me at hello.
