NOW. HERE. THIS.

This homily, which is based on Luke 2:1-14, was delivered for the Christmas Midnight Mass at the Cor Jesu at the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu on 24 December 2019.

This Christmas eve we are reminded of a familiar story. We’ve heard this story countless of times before, but the story never gets old. It is always new. If we let it, it never fails to touch our hearts because it is so simple yet so beautiful.

We’ve met all its characters before, but each time we meet them again, if we let them, we end up loving them more.

WOULD YOU ALLOW GOD TO REVISE YOUR DREAM?

Today we remember the silent dreamer, Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. He does not speak a work in the passages that mention him, but his actions speak volumes.

FINDING NOAH’S ARK

This homily is based on Matthew 24:37-44 for the First Sunday of Advent.

For many of us these days, despair is a real temptation. Some of us have actually sworn to keep away from our newsfeed and just getĀ ourselves inebriated in premature Christmas carols. Can the news in the country, in the US, and in the world get any worse? And I don’t know about you, but today’s Gospel, which opens the season of Advent, is no help as far as lifting our spirits is concerned.

WHICH KING AND WHICH THIEF?

This reflection is based on Luke 23:35-43 for the Solemnity of Christ the King.

It is telling that ours is a religion where kingship is depicted with the king not seated on a throne, not crowned with jewels, or surrounded by a powerful army. Instead we have our king bloodied and crucified, crowned with thorns, and hanging between two criminals.
