We prepare for our retreat by entering through one of the strangest doors in literature and pop culture: Platform 9 3/4 from JK Rowling’s highly successful Harry Potter series.
If you recall from the first book or movie, the young Harry has just been recruited to study at the renowned school of magic called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
To get there, Harry needs to take a mysterious train called Hogwarts Express at London’s King’s Cross station. The problem is, Hogwarts Express starts from no ordinary platform: Not Platform 9, not Platform 10, but Platform 9–and 3 quarters!
Not only is this platform hidden from view, but also, the only way to get to it, as Harry discovers, is to run through the barrier between Platform 9 and 10–with his entire trolley of suitcases!
If you’re interested, you may want to watch this short clip of Harry Potter’s very first time on Platform 9 3/4. It’s a scene from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
