Thirty years ago when I was still a high school student, I stumbled over this novel about a priest gone astray.  Hailed as Australia’s version of Gone with the Wind, this bestselling novel written by Colleen McCullough was eventually adapted into a mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward in 1983.

A few weeks ago I heard the song “Better than I” at a friend’s wedding.  It was the first time I heard the song, a song that turned out to be from the animated musical, “Joseph:  King of Dreams.”

In the movie, Joseph who has been sold by his brothers to Egyptian slave traders, eventually finds himself in prison again because he has been falsely accused.  He feels abandoned by God.  But as he remembers his life, he realizes that God has actually always been with him and has even orchestrated everything in his life to make sure that everything turns out right.

A couple of days ago I got an email from a friend who, as she sometimes does, provided a link and suggested that I check out this clip from YouTube.  The clip turned out to be an interview segment of a recent local beauty pageant.  Apparently, the incident has been receiving a lot of attention the past days.

Eager for a good laugh, I clicked on the YouTube link, and there they were–over ten clips of the same single notorious incident had been uploaded!  One of them, in fact, already received over 700,000 hits.

A strange and disturbing thing happens in the gospel account today. Jesus is speaking to the Jews and tells them what they don’t want to hear: that because they don’t keep his word, they will see death. Of course, the Jews aren’t exactly flattered by this. But when the Lord puts himself on equal footing with God and once again uses God’s name as he refers to himself as “I AM” (“Yahweh”), all hell breaks loose. The Jews pick up stones to throw at him, forcing the Lord to go into hiding.

C.S. Lewis of the “Narnia” fame wrote a different kind of book that he called The Screwtape Letters.  The protagonist is called Screwtape, a middle-level demon in Hell, who writes a series of letters to his nephew, a novice demon named Wormwood. In his letters, the elder demon dishes out all sorts of advice to train his nephew on the art of tempting and corrupting a human soul.  He has a lot of experiences, and as expected, he is quite capable of boasting about his conquests.
